Son Jarocho
and
Community Engagement
My commitment to student and community success goes beyond the halls of Academia. For over 11 years I have engaged in the active performance of the Son Jarocho musical tradition of my hometown, Veracruz, Mexico.
Having performed in multiple Southern California universities, museums, theaters, and festivals for over 9 years as part of Conjunto Tenocelomeh, and now in Washington State performing in museums, universities, and cultural events, I have made of this musical tradition an essential element of my community engagement, public history, and praxis as an educator by sparking conversations on the ways Veracruz’s Afro-descendants helped create this rich musical tradition that has defined the contours of Mexican culture and identity.
This merging of my knowledge of Latin American and Mexican History, my musical performance, and my passion for student and community outreach, defines the pillars of my own practice of Artivism.
