Alan Alexander Malfavon is a historian of late-colonial and 19th Century Mexico, Latin America and the Greater Caribbean. His research interests center around Afro-Mexican, Greater Caribbean, Atlantic World, Veracruz, and African Diaspora Histories.
Dr. Malfavon is a first-generation, migrant, Jarocho, and Mexican-American Scholar.
His first book Men of the Leeward Port: Veracruz’s Afro-Descendants in the Making of Mexico, under contract with the University of Alabama Press, focuses on the understudied Afro-Mexican population of Veracruz and its hinterland of Sotavento (Leeward) and uses it to reframe the historical and historiographical transition between the colonial and national period. It argues how Afro-Mexicans facilitated, complicated, and participated in multiple socio-political processes that reshaped Veracruz and its borderlands. His book resituates Mexico’s socio-political, cultural, and economic networks with the Atlantic World and the Greater Caribbean, and it dissects and problematizes those networks by centering the Black and Afro-Mexican experience.
Men of the Leeward Port interrogates and subverts archival silences that have erased Black and Afro-Mexican agency from narratives of Mexican identity and nation-state formation, seeking to diversify these narratives by foregrounding the voices, perspectives, and actions of Afro-descendants. His work interjects in ongoing interdisciplinary debates about sociopolitical representation of Afro-Mexicans, whose historical and contemporary presence in Mexican and Mexican-American society remains deeply contested.
His latest article entitled “Loyalty, Subjecthood, and Violence: Veracruz’s Afro-descendants in the Early Mexican War of Independence, 1812-1813” was published in the December 2023 issue of The Latin Americanist.
Dr. Malfavon is an Assistant Professor of Mexican and Latin American History at California State University San Marcos.
Dr. Malfavon received his Ph.D. in History from the University of California, Riverside in June of 2021.

Sus intereses de investigación se centran en el estudio de los Afro-Mexicanos y en la historia de México, el Gran Caribe, el Mundo Atlántico, Veracruz, y la diáspora africana.

Su primer libro, Men of the Leeward Port: Veracruz’s Afro-Descendants in the Making of Mexico, bajo contrato con la editorial de la Universidad de Alabama, se enfoca en la infra estudiada población Afro-Mexicana de la ciudad y puerto de Veracruz y su hinterland de Sotavento, usando dicha población para reorientar la transición histórica e historiográfica entre el periodo colonial y el periodo nacional en México. El libro argumenta que los Afro-Mexicanos facilitaron, complicaron y participaron en multiples procesos sociopolíticos que reestructuraron a Veracruz y sus zonas fronterizas. El libro busca resituar las conexiones sociopolíticas, culturales y económicas de México con el Mundo Atlántico y el Gran Caribe. También busca examinar minuciosamente dichas conexiones centrando la experiencia negra y Afro-Mexicana.
Men of the Leeward Port busca interrogar y subvertir silencios de archivo que han borrado a la negritud y a los Afro-Mexicanos de entre las narrativas de identidad Mexicana en la formación de México como estado-nación en el siglo XIX temprano a través de la diversificación de narrativas centrando las voces, perspectivas, y acciones de los afrodescendientes veracruzanos. Este libro busca aportar a debates recientes sobre la representación política de los Afro-Mexicanos, un sector demográfico mexicano cuya presencia histórica entre la sociedad mexicana sigue en contienda.
